k meeting of Mr G. Beetham's Committee takes place at the Temple Chambers at 4 p,m, Our weather reporter writes as follows: The early part of the week was fine and frosty, then we had a strong gale from the south west; afterwards damp, with heavy rain through the nights, Rain fell on three days. Total rain fall for the week is ,440 parts of an inch. The mean reading of the barometer is 29.G1 inches, and for the thermometer it is 45,5 Fah, The wind has varied much both in direction and force throughout the week, being light from the north and north-east and strong from the south and south-west. A telegram from Wellington this morning states that Clarenoe has boen scratched for the Wellington Jockey Club Steeplechase. It is doubtful if the races can be held tin-day owing to wet weather. Mr W. Booth, ot Carterton, writing to the Evening Post saysln your leader last night you advlaa the South Wairavapa electors to reject Mr Buchanan because ho advocates some delay in tho making of the central railway to Auckland, ana you charge him with narrow and interested, motives. Of his motives I will say nothing, as those who know him will promptly acquit him of the charges you make against him, but his reasons are, I think, sufficient to satisfy the electors of the wisdom of his views. He says the land is in the hands of the Natives, and the Government ought to acquire the power to deal with it, with a view to immediate settlement, before the money is borrowed and the line built. The Wairarapa is not opposed to the line, but I with the land available, would poll almost unanimously and the enthusiasm in favor of proceeding with its construction at the earliest period possible. For the present, however, I believe the eleotorß will take Mr Buchanan's advice. But were this objection to Mr Buchanan a serious one, we cannot vote for Mr Bunny. If you look at Ihe Star report of Mr Bunny's spee'oh at Carterton—and Mr Bunny says we are to be guided by the Star's report—you will find that he intends to remove the Custom's dutieß from olothing, tea, sugar, and from English ale to the extent of a shilling a gallon. Of tea, sugar, and ale I have nothing to say, but I would point out that the removal of the duty from olothing would paralyse every woollen mill in the colony, and if the clothing iB to include boots and shoes, the leather industiies would suffer in like manner. These industries have been built up, and can exist only under the protection they enjoy to the extent of about 16 per cent of Customs duties imposed by the present tariff. What justification can Mr Bunny plead for this reckless sacri6ce of colonial industry to secure a few votes ? In the same report you will find that Mr Bunny's Thorndon land nationalisation is modified in the Wairarapa to perpetual leasing. He would apply the system to every acre of unsold land in the colony. Now, what ever advantage may be thought to arise from the system applied to part of the lands, I venture to say that Mr Bunny's views are repugnant to the great body of public opinion, and are in direct and fatal opposition to the opinion and wishes of the electors. Of Mr Bunny's disingenuous treatment of some local questions, this is not the place to speak; we are dealing effectually with them in the district. 1 will only add that few things can be more unfortunate for the colony, or help more to intensify the depression which exipts, that these reckless pro--ceedings. The wild taljj of the past few months threatening land titles is doing great harm, and now Mr Bunny proposes a change in the Customs tariff as uncalled tor as it would be ruinous to some of the most important and progressive of our established colonial industries.
