The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1884. CASTING A STONE.
Severe indignation is still expressed that Mr George Beetham should have given twenty-five pounds to the Masterton Hospital. If he had kept the two hundred guineas in his pocket which he earned by a fortnights legislative work, the finger of scorn would undoubtly have been pointed towards him, He would have been described as the rich man carrying off the poor man's ewe lamb. He should have given the money away, only lie should have waited till after the election was over, because by giving it in front of the polling booth he might influence a vote in his own favor. A candidate should not spend money at election time save and excepting in employing a paid canvassing agent, in supplying refreshments to thirsty Committeemen, and in printing and advertising. Expenditure in these directions is legitimate as it does not influence votes. ]f Mr G-, Beetham had had Mr McCardle's trains he would have spent the twenty-five pounds in one or other of these legitmate directions where votes are not influenced and he would ha vegot more votes for Ms money than he could possibly have obtained by his gift to the Hospital, The poor fellows with broken legs lying in the wards who will get the benefit of Mr Beetham's money, wont be able to vote for him.
