The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1884. WHAT MR BEETHAM HAS DONE.

It is amusing to notice that i)me people in the excitement of the present election go so far as to ask what Mv Beetham has done for the Wairarapa. do not believe that any member fef any in New Zealand has done as much for his constituents as Mr Beetham. For seven long years Mr Beetham has devoted the whole of his time, in session and out of session to working for the interests of his constituents, Through his influence thousands of pounds have annually been voted by Parliament for public works in this district, and every local institution has at various times had friendly help from his hand. We do feel somewhat pained and humilitated that there should be amongst us settlers who ask " what Mr Beetham has done for the Wairarapa." We shall never never again get a member who will do as much, and we begin to think that the Wairarapa hns got more from Mr Beetham than it has deserved, and some day when it finds itself out in the cold with a talker instead of a worker for its representative it will reap the reward of the ingratitude which it now displays, We do not) mean by this intimate that Mr McCardle will win the present contest. Just now ho is very popular and apparently carrying all before him, but there is an undercurrent against him among men who think more than they talk and who are asking themselves what good Mr McCardle will be to to the district, and what there is in him to fit him for a seat in the House of Representatives, The result of the polling day will we feel certain be in favor of Mr G. Beetham. What- has not Mr Beetham done for Masterton and for the country districts during the past few years, A single glance round the town recalls at once some of the benefits he has conferred upon us, To whom do we owe our handsome new courthouse? Mr Beetham! Who obtained for us our commodious post and telegraph offices 1 Mr Beetham I Who got us an extra £IOO for our hospital last year? Me Beetham! Who has helped us from time to time with our school, our library, our Town Lands Trust, our park, our churches, and numberless other institutions 1 Mr Beetham 1 But these examples which we have named have been comparatively miuor benefits. Year after year he succeeded in getting placed on the estimates many a thousand pound for road construction and it is this money which by opening up the country into the town has made Masterton the most thriving and populous inland centre in the North Island. We believe Mr McCardle, if returned, will do his best to benefit the district, but we feel quite certain that where he could get a half-crown for us Mr 6. Beetham could obtain a sovereign, We do not despise the half crown, but we have not a very hiedi opinion of electors who would change off a soverign in order to secure two shillings and sixpence, Masterton is at the present time fairly prosperous —compared with many other centres of population it is decidedly flourishing—but if the electors in their wisdom conclude that it is expedient to cut off their nose to "spite their face" it will soon be poverty stricken.
