Received July 9, 12.42 a,m.-In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, M Ferry, the Premier, mado a statement regarding the recent engagements between tho French and Chinese troops it Langson in Tonquin, He announced that from the accounts which have been received by the Government, it was clear that the French force which was going to occupy Langsun, in accordance with the treaty, had been led into a regular ambush by the Chinese, M, Ferry further stated that it was the intention of his Government todemand from Chinaan indemnity of £10,000,000 sterling, as reparation for the outrage, It is currently stated hero today that the Government will order the occupation of Foochow by French troops, as a guarantee for the payment of the indemnity to bo demavidcd from China.
London, July 7. In answer to a question put in the House of Commons to-day, the Hon Evelyn Ashley slated that lord Derby had received an offer from the Australian colonies to contribute a yearly sura of £15,000 towards maintaining a High Commissioner of the Western Paoifio, who would reside in Eastern New Guinea. Mr Ashley added that Her Majesty's Government would take steps to orgauise a sufficient staff to assist the Commissioner, and that the appointment of the latter would be made promptly.
