TINUI
(From our own Correspondent.)
News, unlike, mud is a scarce article in this neighborhood, and I cannot even unfold a lain, of that most sanguine of beasts, the ferret, having murdered the most aristocratic member of a hen roost. But to my, task, The .past month has been remarkable for a vory heavy flood causing considerable damage to all the roads, Another e'ventcausing even more excitement was the long talked of "Bachelor's Ball." It was an affair " elite," The social tether line had been carefully drawn so. that no conductor of the patient ox or tlie 'lllllllol' of the furry rodent were allowed to outer the gaily decked hall. Several remittance men were however nnticeahio. It would, be invidious,'if not unsafe among so many fair ones adorned "a hi mode" to say who. was the belle on this occasion. One gay youth of Herculean size, with pedal appendages incased in bullock-hide leggings and size sixteen boots, innocent of Day & Martin, but embellished with spurs, was an object of terror to tho devotees of Terpsichore. It was evident some people had corns and objected to bo spurred in the mazy dance, Young'man, take a hint and don't do ao any more.
After several attempts llieTinui Jockey Club has boen formed and some 54 members enrolled, At Ibe meeting held at the Tinui Hotel on Saturday last.tho following gentlemen were elected officers and stewards viz., President, W, 11. Beotham Eso,; Vice President, J. Mormon Esq.; Judge, A. McHutcbon ; Starter, J. Scofield ; Clerk of Scales, J. A. Perry ; Clerk of Course, J. McDonnell; Handicappera, Messrs J. C. Vallance and R. Armstrong; Secretary and Treasurer, T. Mackay; Stewards, Messrs J? Sheath, A. Walker, J. W, Smith, T. Carswell, J, Drummond, P. Taylor, and R. K Chamberlain; Messrs McHutchon, J. 0. Vallance, and Thos. Dillon were appointed Trustees to deal with-Mr Andrew respectins; the lease of the race course. Resolutions to the effect that the Stewards form a committee to examine and report to next .meeting re the desirability of adopting the Wairarapa Jockey Club rules, That the secretary communicate with Mr Andrew, and inform him that the Club had been formed and were prepared to rent the course on the terms dffered, and request him to have a lease drawn out, Mr Mackay read a lotter from Mr Andrew, agreeing to let the course for seven instead of five years as at first stated.
A meeting of the School Committee was held on Saturday evening last, when Mr S. Ttirkington's appointment in place of Mr Yates (who removes to Te Aro School) was apnroved of. General and sincere regret is expressed at Mr Yates leaving the district, Though but a short time here, he has won golden opinions, and has done good work to advance and popularise the school, Apart from his official duties, ho will be missed, for be has acted the good Samaritan in several cases of sickness and accident, ' with marked skill,
While mentioning accidents, I regret to record that two have occurred in tho district recently, One happened to a nephew of Mrs Owen's resulting in a broken collar bono, and the other to a young man named Charleton, an employee on Oastlepoint station, who had his thigh broken, in both cases tho sufferers being thrown from thfiir horses.
By notice m tho Government Gazette, Messrs F. BradingandJ. A, Perry are appointed Trustees of the Tinui Cemetery.
the" election" is becoming an exciting topic here now. Opinion seems to favor our ola representative, Mr G. Beetham, Still, wo hope the worthy and genial Pahiatua horticulturist will pay Tinui a visit, but that, unlike a former" Liberal" candidate, he will not. be accompanied by two .policemen, Such things are so awfully suggestive, and so' eminently complimentary to the free and enlightened eleotors. I'note a meeting to forma committee to ensure Mr Beetham's return is to be held on the 6th inst, at 4 p.m.
A.meeting called for the 21st of last month by a sufferer from the stringent working of the Sheep Aot, rosulted in the convenor being present " all alone," It is evident the downtrodden squatters were not' sympathetic, at least not much. i I have some news that will rejoice that writer calling himself "snip." The festive mongoose' will shortly arrive in numbers here, a station-owner whose proclivities tend towards natural enemies having a shipment en route.
