I UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION,] A MURDEROUS SCOUNDREL, Nelson, June 30, Early on Sunday morning a murderous assault was made on a man named Malier. It appears that two men, Franklin and Malier, were drinking together on Saturday night, and the latter accompanied Franklin to his home, where they drank a bottle of brandy, A quarrel afterwards took place, when, it is supposed, Franklin split Maher's head open with an axe, as he was found lying in Eranklin's house with a fearful gash on the left temple about five inches long. Malier was taken to the hospital, but faint hopes are given of his recovery, Franklyn was arrested yesterday, and will be brovght up this morning. Franklin arrived in Nelson from Havelook some three months ago. He was pharged at the Police Court this morning with unlawfully wounding one William Maher with a axe, with intent to commit murder, but was remanded, bail being refused. The injuied man appears slightly better this morning, but can scarcely recover. iNVERCAitGIIX, this day.
