' (UNITED PRESSi ASSOCIATION.) 1 Gisborne, Tuesday. The Supreme Court opened this morning, before Judge Gillies. In his charge to the Grand Jury,.he stated the calender was comparatively light. He commented on the fact that Natives were sufficiently civilised when able to write so well as to forge cheques, for which one Native will be tried. <
No further election returns have yet been received, Downes, Deputy Returning Officer, started out on Sunday, with the' rivers very much swollen, His horse has returned with the saddle, but without Downes. It is feared Downes is lost. In consequence of Supreme Court sitting, the constable cannot be spared to go in search.
