CORRESPONDENCE.
, SHOOTING DEER. TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—Lovers of sport must notice with pleasure that Mr Beetham'and others are getting our rivers stocked with fish, and than the day cannot be' far distant when gentlemen residing in the Wairarapa will be able to h'sh with rod and line. It is to be hoped that the members of the Acclimatisation Society will put a stop to the unmanly action of' people thatare shooting dot'i' out of season in the South Waintapa district.; They are being shot wheiuhoy are neither fit for use nor ornament. There is a proper season for shooting deer as well as other game, and it is very discreditable to Wairarapa sportsmen that they should be taking advantage of those noble animals in the breeding season. laui, An Old Sportsman.
TO THE EDITOR, Sin,—l was pleased to see the very plain and unmistakable manner in which Mr Gapper spoke against the funds of the Town Lands Trust being spent for the benefit of a select few, when he opposed the grant of fifty pounds for the purchase of scientific apparatus, etc. When the original founder of the Trust set apart these lands for eduoational purposes 1 believe the idea was to put the means of giving- a useful education to Iris children within the reach of every poor man; but I do not think that they for one moment supposed that these means weuld be taken advantage of by pro ; fessional men, and others who constitute the social "upper crust" in a £mall place like this—people whose incomes'amount, in most instances, to more.' in oho month than a laboring man earns'in'a. year. ■Of course, as long as they have a legal (if not a social) right to- take these advantages v'a can say nothing against their doing so, but it is certainly time to step ip and enter a protest when we see them send two of their number as a deputation to ask for money that can only ppssibly benefit a small minority of the school children, and that minority belonging to their own class. Working men's children don't require .'.'.Scientific apparati", to, complete their; education with, and I sihc'erejy Hop? "that Mr .Gapper and the rest of'the nUemberS of the Trust will always refuse;to vote! a single penny, that will 'not'benefit all the children equally, no matter what the position of the parents may be.
