The Emperor William issued the following proclamation on March 25: On my birthday, March,22, on which I, through God's blessing, completed my 87th year, I was favored with numberless congratulations, as in all former years, from the vorv limits of the Empire, and evon from foreign lands where Germans are living. Communities and corporations, the rejoicing nation, some in body, others individually; all have been trying to give me a proof of their feeling for ine. In complimentary addles and telegrams, in poetical and musical tributes, in special present" and by taeana of flowers have I received, to. my intense happiness, from my subjects proofs of their kindly feeling and of their gratitude, Of thesp the heart of the Jf'atherland is full,. Under such an elevating impression of a tiioveinent bo widely extended, to. me, surrounded as I am with a noble circled high Qerman princes, the returnv of my birthday has indeed become'a most pleasing event. Moved to the quick by such eloquent signs of attachment, I am unable to convoy to you, my people, my earnest thanks for all the loving attention and homage ; iwith' which I have been greeted from all sidea—near and far distant. "From the universal attention and, homage I gather, to my entire satisfaction, the happy assurance that the whole, nation is united together in the bonds of pure love foi their country without consideration of such points of difference as political and religious that this bond oi union is cemented by • a true faithfulness to the Emperor and and the Empire. Elevated by this conviction, it will henceforth, as before, be the happiest endeavor of my life to promote and consolidate by peaceful toil the welfare of our beloved German Fatherland, May God give me •■wisdom and power to do fio, : may iny earnest endeavor in this respect be crowned with success, and may (that success be to my beloved subjects I ', temporal and eternal welfare,—WitHAM.
