[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT, ] Reuter'b Telegrams, MELBOURNE, May 26,10 a.m. Received May 26, 2.15 p.m. —A rumor was widely circulated here on Saturday and Sunday that the London Chartered Bank of Australia was about to suspend payment. The newspapers this morning, however, publish a paragraph showing that the Bank is thoroughly sound, and has a large balance of assets over liabilities. It is further announced that the local manager received a telegram from London on Saturday stating that the Bank has declared a dividend of .5 per cent for the past half year, and carried £25,000 .to reserve. 10.15 a.m. There was a considerable rush of depositors this morning to tho London Chartered Bank to withdraw their balances, but it is understood that the bank is prepared for any emergency. 11 a.m. Tho rush on the London Chartered Bauk was ot no importance, and has now ceased. More money has been today deposited than withdrawn up to the present time. LONDON,. May 23. The London Gazette to-day announces sundry promotions in and appointments to the Order of St. Michael and St. George, including the following: Che Hon Sir Alfred Stephen, K.C.M.G., Lieutenant-Governor of New South' Wales, to be a Knight Grand Cross, and Mr Frederick Napier Broome, 0.M.G., Governor of Western Australia, to be a Knight Commander of the said Order, The Gazette also announced that the honor of knighthood has been conferred on Mr Samuel Davenport, of South Australia. Egerton, British Minister at Cairo, stating that the Mudir (Governor) of Dongola had reported the receipt of reliable intelligence to the effect that the Mahdi is now at Ebraham, in Kordofan. CAIRO, May 23. Great efforts are now being made to secure the southern frontier of Egypt Proper against the invasion by the followers of Mahdi. A large force of Egyptian troops has arrived at Waddy , Haifa .under the command of British officers, and will at once comraenoe to fortify the place.
