THE HON. C. J. PHARAZYN AND ILLEGAL PRACTICES.

The Hon. 0. J. Pharazyn is especially unfortunate in his experiences as a Thovndon elector. It • will be remembered that at the last election there were two polling places, and Mr Pharazyn voted a<i both, for which illegal practice he was duly tried and convicted, Now this conviction entailed 1 certain disqualifications. Under clause 11 of the Corrupt Practices Prevention Act, a person bo convicted should have his name expunged from the Electoral'

801 l for a period of , three years, and should have it inserted in a separate list entitled "The list of persons disqualified for illegal practices," but the Registration officer for Thorndon apparently omitted to do this, Clause 24, however, provides that "if any person while he is in conse quence.- of conviction, not capable i Q t pursuance of the provisions of this Act, of voting at any election, whether 'election or an election to' ' any public office, votes or applies for a ballot paper at any such olection, he shall; notwithstanding his name is on the register of electors or of persons entitled to vote at the said election to any public office, be liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding one hundred pounds and his vote shall'be void." The Hon. 0. J. Pharazyn voted yesterday in defiance of this provision, and we have the best authority for' saying that immediate proceedings are to be instituted against him for this "illegalpractice,"—Post.
