FERRETS.
TU Illli IvUlTUlt, Dear Sin,—ln your report of the meeting held in llic Lower Valley I see that they are strongly in favor of using ferrets for the purpose of exterminating the rabbit pest. Now, sir, ferrets have been very much used in. the Kaikoura district, and die only way that they can be used is by breeding them and keeping them... tone. When they are turned out they only' kill what they require for food, and do ; not trouble ■ about the others. Judging from what Mr : Harris said I presume that some of the settlers in' the Valley have the ferrets running wild. Now, instead of-breeding so many as spoken of by Mr Elgar it would pay better to breed less, have a man in oharge of them with a good pack of rabbit dogs and I believe that there would be a far better result gained than would ever be obtained by breeding large numbers of ferrets and letting them run wild, to become in their turn as groat a stumbling block in the district as those they were introduced to eradicate were before them. It must not be forgotten too, that ferrets will kill more than rabbits, Yours, Ac,, Query.
