:ok;i \smim\\ivLmM, • ,'. was read' tvt tlie on Saturday last;''•lißjjrJ! kv6H!o ! honor to submit to'you my report jupon'itbe various works inipro.gressin,the,distriot for the past month as fpHows :'":"•- , ,;*'
' No, 1 Wari.-The coutraot let to Mr Stevens for the formation of the western end of the Alfre'dton.district.road has made fair progress during the past two months, A considarable-length of the earthwork has been roughly completed/and a fair proportion of the" timber required for the construe-' tion.of the culvert has been delivered on the ground. The oyer-seei, who has recently inspected the contract, expresses satisfaction with the class of work being performed, hut is of opinion that the 'contract at tho present rate of progress cannot bo fulfilled hy con., tract time.. The contraqt-for the construction, of bridges on the;sainej line, which aro, : in the hands of MrEvcnden, is not, receiving 'i that prompt attention nocessary to eiisura the delivery of tho timber through the unmetallcd road between Eketahuua and Alfredton before the road be'omes impracticable for hoavy traffic. At present only a few loadß have been carted about half way to Eketahuna and deposited there for the present, owing to the impassible state of the line (for tarso dray traffic) for a distance of half a mile beyond this point, I have served Mr Evenden with a notice directing that other arrangements must be at once entered into to ensure the immediate delivery of the balasco of the materials from Messrs Duncan anl.Toomath's mills, and further to engage for the early prosecution of tho delivery of the timber on to the sites of the bridges, by use Of bullock drays or other adequate means. These instructions being complied withlhave.s,till hbpethat the creeks may. be bridged before the winter is far advanced, ■ • :
No, 2 Ward.-The foncingof the line of road leading into 'Mr Donovan's when last inspected had been so disgracefully performed hy Messrs Luimiu and McLachlau, that it has ken necessary; to require, them to re-erect, parts of'it .and re-adjust and strain'the wires, '.Tike has not since admitted of the work.beiug re-examined owing to the 'inspector having been ah ent in the back portion of the district. The cleansing of the Manaia road drains, but for one or two small defects (vhich will shortly be remedied) has bejn faithfully performed by Mr Wickenden; ll ..will, ask the Board to pass tho amount due to him in order to obviate unnecessary delay in the settlement of his accounts. ' -
No, 3 Ward.-Thi contract for tho formation and metalling of sections upon-the Upper Opaki lino has been all but coin-. plctsd_ by jfr Goorge Maokay. Tho final trimming and stono breaking on one of the sections lias still to bo performod. This his been deferred until now, owing to the eontractor h iving given ino to understand that his work hut beon passed by the overseer when such was not the case. This, no doubt, has been the outcome of somo slight misunderstanding' Tho contractor however, is fortunately in a position to remedy these defects, there being still a small balance due to him by the Beard, The extension, of Mr: Eaton's i contract on : the Matahiwi road has been satisfactorily finished-and passed by the Overseer. The formation work on the Paivau section of the Upper Opaki road are well advanced, and it is anticipated will be completed in tho courso of eight or ten dsys. As yot I have not been able to arrange for the deepening of the drains along this lino, hut hope-toensu'ro the execution of the work by next sitting of the Board, On the Upper Fernridgc road progrow is still slow owiug to the exceptionally great amount of fain which falls close to tno main lsuge. About !J chains of metalling and 16 chains of earthwork have been crrriod oiit during the past month,'which, all things considered, may bo deemed tolciab y satisfactory. My attention has boen called to the almost im- . passable state of a short length of the branch lino from the main Forty Milo Bush road, leading to Mr Thomas Brown's on the Opaki, To remedy this nuisance it will bo necessary to construct*-small box culvert across tho with about a chain of light formation I will ask the authority of the Board to have this undertaken, Complaints are also common respecting the crossing of a small Btream at the eastern extremity of the Opaki loop line. This has become very boggy and dangerous to cross with heavv loads. For temporary requirements lam of opinion that a stone ford with approaches, can be constructed at a small cost, and will answer all tho requirements of the. line for tht present, It is my intention to make arrangemonts during the coming month (weather favoring) to have the stumping and formation on the short section on the Mikimiki line earned out. No 4 Ward,-The construction of tho Wauiuiora bridge ia - being steadily pushed forward, and, bat for tho recent floods having retarded the crossing of the timber over the Taueru river, the consti notion of one of the trusses.would have baen well forward by this.;. The Waipawa Valley road is slowly adyancing towards completion -the late unpropitious weather materially lutreferod with its progress. The bridges arci in an advanced state of construction, and I trust the line may bo available for traffic during the present month, Westmero ro'ad.-The formation on this lmohas > } Mieve,.boen completed, and one of the bridges, temporary erected to admit of the materials for the construction of bridge No 2 being forwarded to the site, It is anticipated tho.contract will be complotcd before the next sittingof the.Board, Nothing farther has been done towards completing the approaches to the Whakatamahino bridge, embraced in the bridge contract of Messrs Eeese aud Dawson. I have, however, stipulated' to have this work proceeded with as nm as Mr Dawson is able to proceed to tho'ground, which will bo in tlw course of the next fortnight, No. 5 Ward.-The-remainder of. tho timber delivered on tho Blairlogie road for , the construction of the additional culverts required on that Hue, has been worked up, ! and- the. culverts placed in the positions where they wore most required. I regret that between tho date of the delivery of tho i timber and that of the Overseer constructing the culverts a considerable amount of the timbor and the whole of the spikes had been stolon, so that one or two of the very necessary culverts had to be omitted. lam of opinion that to make ...this line fit for tho traflitof the district it serves that it will bo necessary in many plaoes whore the original formation works have boau slummed, to re-form them and widen tho formation throughout, The last of the timber for tho construction of die East Co. st road culverts has been delivered on the Coast, and the work -.of ■putting tho culverts together is proceeding slowly under tho'supervision of tho roadman, I have recoived a plan of the Waiorongo' property from Mr Frasi, upon which ho has marked the travorse of the Uriti road. lam-therefore now in a position to prepare an estimate of what money will be required to comp'.ete'-the fencing of'that line. Plans and specifications havo been prepared for the approaches to the Wainuioiu bridge, also of the proposed line connecting it with the Whakatamahini, I will request .authority, to have these advertised tenders to close on the 26th inst. ."Ihave, Ac,,.
