GOVERNESSES FOR THE COLONIES.
A t tliii Manchester City Police Court ou 21j1.1i January, a Russian Jew, who gave the name of Alfred Abram Saul Stamui, was brought up under the Vagrant Act, charged with having, together with other persons unknown, with a supposed immoral and fraudulent intent, conspired against a Miss Brown, a governess, residing in London. The lady in question had inserted an advertisement in the London papers for a situation as governess. She received a letter from the prisoner in the following terms, and only signed Alfred Abram, instead of his full name;— I "Miss,—Would you kindly state on what subject you are proficient to teach, and your experience and connection j if suitable you may have a good chance to go to Australia. Would you object to state what color your hair is, and of what build you are 1 an early reply is expected," DetectiveInspector Caminada said the prisoner resided off Nelson street, Charlton-on Med lock, where he lodged in a room which he used as a bedroom and sitting-room. That morning witness visited the prisoner and showed him tne letter which witness hnd received from the chief constable, with instructions to make inquiries about it. The prisoner at first denied, but ultimately admitted, having written the letter. Witness then said to him, "If yon wish this lady to go to Australia, what position are you yourself in tlmt you can guarantee a situation in the colonies ?" He replied, " Oh, lam a Freemason, and a member of the Mark Lodge ; that is enough for you." Whilst witnesses was in the room another reply was received as follows: —"Mr Signotia is an Italian, of Florence, and Spanish acauired in Madrid ; aged, twenty-live. Able to sing »iid piny the piano." In order to allow the police time to make further inquiries, the prisoner was remanded,
