Wn;hv:e received tho following letter from tlio Secretary of the Pastoral Society, which tends to clear the ground a little on tho subject of the composite medals :-r- ---" Carterton,-17th Maroh, 1884, ; "Dear Sins,-1 am in receipt of your letter of the 15th inat, 1 do not wish to be drawn into a quarrel between yourselves and Mr Hißlop, but I think that, under the circumstances, you are entitled to a statement of tho facts so far as'l know them concerning tho gold medals in question. In 18811 had some correspondence with Mr Hislop, and, on behalf of tho Society, I ordered from him a certain number of gold mcihk I took the medals which Mr Hislop supplied in accordance with this order to ba gold, i,e, solid gold medals, and in tkt belief de. liyerod them to the respective winners, Some short time afterwards Mr Hislop informed me, : irerbally, that tho medals were not solid gold,' but that a plate of silver was put inßide of them, mentioning at the same fcime.that it, eould not.be reasonably expected that medals of that size and weight could 86 supplied in. solid, gold at the price wronged for,.
