A NEW FIREBELL.

To the Editor,

Sir,-I am directed. by the Fire Brigade to appeal to the public of Masterton for help to purchase a large fire alarm-bell for the town, and to erect the present bell in some position at the northern end. We have already applied to the Borough Council for help, but our appeal was not met with the liberality which v/o hoped and wished lor. Our City Fathers voted five pounds ; but as we require a fire bell, and not a sheep bell, this sum is insufficient. The brigade has a " Members' Fund" (principally the proceeds of an entertainment), amounting to some £l3, out of which we propose to take £lO towards the new bell. The members are provided with subscription lists, and we propose to ask the citizens for half-a-crown each) and having raised as much as possible in this way, wo shall again ask the Borough Council to supplement the sum raised; and we hope to obtain by these means a thoroughly good bell. It has been said that the present bell is ample for all tho requirements! of the town, but those who say so do not belong to the brigade, the members of which—the best judges of what is required— are unanimous in lamenting the present altogether insufficient means of raising an alarm in case of fire. And we appeal to the public with full confidence that wo shall easily obtain tho means we require for this very necessary purpose. Half-crowns will be received by any member of the brigade, or by

Yours, etc,

Wsr. M. Eastiiope, Hon, sec.
