The following paragraph appears in the last issue of our local contemporary: Mr W, Lawrence has asked us through cur columns to state that aletter which appeared in our contemporary reflecting strongly on the character of tho prizo of ±'s 5s offered by Mr A. R. Hislop, jeweller of Wellington, as a special for the beet draught entire shown at tho Into exhibition of tho W, and E, 0. Pastoral and Agricultural Society, was neither written, signed, dictated, or authorized by him; that ho has not presented the society's order to Mr Hislop, and that thedamaging statements contained in the letter are altogether untounded and malicious. Mr Lawrence wishes us to state that he objects to .be made a medium for the spite of other people, and that in this instance his name had been attached without his permission to a tissue of deliberate falsehoods, Will Mr W. Lawrence kindly call at our office, and we will show him the letter in question, signed with'his own ! 'name, which duly reached us through the Post, ' Some " tall lying" is evidently going on somewhere, and we must look to Mr W. Lawrence to assist in detecting the culprit, Mr Lawrence's action in going to our contemporary to contradict a statement which appeared in our columns is, to say the least, "circuitous," and we trust he will not be afraid to come forward and clear the matter up in a straightforward manner. Till he does do so we must assume that tho letter signed "William Lawrence"emanated from him.

The Autumn Show of the Masterton Horticultural Society on Wednesday last was, taken as "a whole, a very creditable exhibition, and, contrasted with previous ones, indicated a marked advance in the quality of .-exhibits. The speciality of this new oompany acorns to' bo in making cash adyances on growing produce, stock, and other property- consigned to the company for realisation ' of morgaga or lien. If this can be worked as a safe commercial principle by a company operating with ample capita' and proper prudence, there will doubtless be a large field for this new enterprise, Tho prospeotus also indioatos that shareholders will. have preference in applications for such loans and facilities as tho company can offer to its clients; this being intended apparently for persona having stock or produce to dispose of. Companies working on this principal havo bsen successful in Australia, the operations of Goldsbroueh and Company being enormous in magnitude; therefore there ought to be no hindrance to the starting of a similar co-operative project in this district. ■'Messrs 0.
