The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1884. MR LEE'S REPORT FOR 1883.
1 We have received a copy of Mr Lee's tenth, jatfiiaal report ; condition of tho primary schools in,the Wellington Provincial District. I ifThe numbe>Gn'the books for las^ypai'was ! 7050 asVco'mpared with 6&S feV 'the previous, year. : The' pa&iis ; ijhof : !a . falling off of 6 per cent;,,' bg thii : Mr Leb attributes tion papers having been more stringent than formerly. After referring to the city schools, the report cqmm.ents on ithc.digtrictiown schools in'which ;the! Masterton school takes 'the: lead,': having produced the highest -pel- ceritage, and, dii "the whole, a class of .results inferior to none in the district. ; '' This school was distinguished by good reading in all classes, good writing in nearly all, with excellent writing in the third standard, andstrongarithmetic throughout. Next in order of merit.in the "Wairarapa were the Featherston, Clareville and Groytown Schools, In tho Clareville school the strongest subjects were grammar and geography; all the written work was very neat; and some exceedingly creditable work was done in the two higher standards, and especially by one or .two of the best pupils.'' Except in third standard work, the Gteytown school- was" much improved, The upper and. lower classes.at Feathereton were generally strong in their work,, and.the school was well conducted. The Carterton school—one' of the very best taught schools in the district-has sijffered much this year from untoward causes.' : Themaster has been very ill/there has] Wehilohgi'period of severe.sickness-k' .the.neigbborhood, and the school year fiaa been shortened, Underihese icir- i
cumstanccs it cannot bo a matter of suvpriso that tlio results are low. Al-! though thero was a great break down in the middle of the school, some excellent work was done in the first and sixth standards, especially in the latter, two boys clearing the arithmetic paper, and all work being exceedingly neat, full, and accurate. The tone, discipline, and general management of nearly'all the district town schools are very satisfactory. Most of those in the Wairarapu present a.favorable contrast to several of the city, schools, in the neatness and•. appointments of the. olassroom, In the larger of those schools also, as well as in one or two city schools, well-drilled rifle corps are maintained. We will take another opportunity of referring more particularly to the other salient points of Mr, Lee's report.
