Donemn, February 19. Tho licensing- elections created a good deal of interest to-day, The Good Templars' Ticket included the names of Messrs Stout and If, W. Green. Mr Stout was elected in all four districts, but Mv Green in none. 'Mr lishj-' M.11R., on the publican's ticket, Aya's elected for one district. • There >yas.Va majority in the Good Templars' interest in two districts, and for the [ publican. ticket in one, and in the fourth district, it is claimed that four of those returned' aw pledged to revert to :iO-o'clock licenses, '.-•',
'liMAßu,,Wednesdoy. At the RM. Court Joseph Mackay, on a charge of embezzlement of' £l' Is 6dfrom the N.Z. Government,lnsurance Department was remanded io Geraldine. The accused observed that the charges were wholly false, and were the result of, his persistent opposition to the' Department. A NAPIER EDUCATION DIET! CTJLTY. Napier, February 19. At meeting of the Education Board, held to-day, it was stated; that ..the: overdraft was practically absorbed on the whole of tho building grant. Many of the schools are disgracefully overcrowded. While the board sat a telegram arrived; stating that at-Hastings 250 children were on tho school roll, the building being calculated to accomo- ! date 170. The Inspector stated that the average attendance in the schools of the board in this district was 116 for every 100 places provided. Mr Ormond, tho chairman, remarked that the board could not fulfil its functions owing to want of building funds, an* advocated local rating power if Parliament could not vote sufficient funds for their maintenance. ?'
