SPORTING NOTES.

By Tipster. , The Autumn Meeting of tlio Wairarapa Jockey Club commences to-mor-row at; Taulierenikau, under very favorable circumstances, as far as entries are concerned, and nil tlifit is now required to complete the success is the favor of the elerk of the weather. The ploughed gallop at the course has been the scene of great activity for the past few weeks between, twenty and thirty and thirty aspirants'for the judges verdict being regularly on the improving (1) track. Up to the present very good work has been done, the only case in which it has not proved beneficial, being Mr Jas. llacara's Romp, who has consequently been scratched for all engagements. This will 110 doubt dissappoint a great many (owner included), for the game little filly was looked upon as good enough for one of the two events she was nominated for, and with the weight she bad to carry, would have made things look very interesting at the finish.

For the Derby only four out of twenty-two nominations have elected to face the starter, viz., Rata, Ada 'Yorke, Kopi, and Consul. This will be a very interesting event if the two latter go the post in anything like condition, aud taking all things into consideration they tire-the.only two in it. These two met in the A.8.0. Stakes and Nursery Handicap at the Spring Mesting, 1882 Taulierenikau, and each won an event. In the following Autumn Meeting they again met t.wice-Oham-pagne Stakes and Nursery Handicapwhen Consul beat Kopi, the latter finishing second each time. Since then Consul has done some very creditable running (anda lot of it,.too)and has stamped himself among the best of our district horses. Kopi lias only run about three times since, being beaten at the last W..J.C, Spring Meeting by Administrator, in the Spring Maiden Stakes, w.f a., Administrator carrying 9st, Kopi 7st l'lib, and als» in the County Plate Handicap, the roan then carrying Bst3lb and the chestnut. 6st 121b, on all occasions Kopi finishing second. He also finished seconi to Ninette 9st- in the L.Y.J.C. Handicap, carrying 7st, and beating Firstwater with 7st 91b,

Tor the Tauherenikau Stakes, seven out of eleven have accepted the handicappers impost, amoug which is Danebury, at top weight, 9st 31b, and as he is reported to bo in good fettle a repetition of 1881, when lie ran away at the start from the held, would not be a surpriser, although, on the present occasion, he carries a steadier, whereas on that auspicious occasion he only had Ist 101b up, At the following Spring Meeting he ran in the County, Plate Handicap with 9st 41b up, but as he was partly dressed, and finished - near the rear it was thought lie did net go out with tlio intention of winning. The other starters have appeared before the public constantly, and their performances are so well-known that it would not benefit much to recapitulate them. In the Champagne Stakes and Nursery Handicap eight "youngsters" are to try conclusions, Pasha, Rollo, Tawcra aud Princess Royal have already made their debut,' the two former shaping very well, Rollo winning the Sapling Stakes at Wailienga with Pasha second, Tawera finishing third. Princess Royal was entered as a hack at the last Taratahi meeting, and ran very indifferently. Unless she has improved on her form then it will not do to look for her at the front with such company as Rollo and Pasha. Waituatalm is looked upon as a good thing, but until these "infants" have faced a crowd their movements arc very uncertain, especially when coming down the straight, and it is far safer to invest on the tried ones,

Nine out of twelve liave accepted for the cup, Danebury again being top weight. Among the best in this are Consul and Putangitangi, the latter being a great favorite among the knowing ones. Should the little filly come to the post at all lit, there is no doubt she will give a good account of herself and bo among the first rank at the finish,

The District Handicap shews eight acceptors out of thirteen nominations Ninette being at her old place at the top of the list with 9st, closely followed by Administrator with Bst 121bs. As there are ono or two good light weights in it the winner will have to travel for it, and as weight is a great consideration when speed is required, the winner may be looked forward to among the lower members.

: Only four out of nine are going for the hurdles, and its a toss up which to pick. '< In making an investigation on the Totalisator the safest way would ba.to'jnit tlio four names in a hat and back.; the one first pulled out, for what between running off and falling there is no dependence. to be put in them, except it is Zulu, who by the bye, has proved himself a very good performer over sticks a3 a hack, and way'yet show us what a hack can do in good company.

The bracelet will bring out a very interesting field of eight, some of the district renowned flyers being among the'number.

Tho selling ra:o has fivo aspirants for the auctioneers hammer, among which there is The Diver, the Cup and District winner of 'B2,

Tho Grand Stand Handicap has sixteen nominations, the weight for which event will be declared after the Cup race has been run, In addition to the races enumerated there will be a catch weight hack race for the Ludwig Cup, a 10st hack race and the usual hack hurdles.

Taken as a whole, the programme promises one of the best sporting meetings yet held at Tauherenikau.

The following are the selections for the different events, to finish in the order named First Day—Wairarapa District Produce - Consul, ' Kopi, Tauherenikau Stakes Glaicks, Ninette, Administrator. Champagne : Stakes—Hollo, Pasha, Lady's Bracelet—Uncle Tom, Flycatcher, Wairarapa District Handicap Consul, Putangitangi. . Second Day—Handicap HurdlesZulu, Cribbage, Selling Raice—Diver.
