Sir—l have the honor to submit the following brief report on the.public works of the County— ; Opaki-Manawatu Road.—The maintenance men on this road have been employed during,.the past month in attending to surface repairs, scrub cutting, drainage; ; <!sc; Bridge contract No 17 is now completed; the materials .used jthroughout 'are fairly good, and, the works are well executed/ In order •that this road may 1 be in fair condition during next winter, several short.sections. :of roetalliijgj will. have 1 tp be undertaken at an-qarly date. . • Makakahi Road—Contract No 1: The works on this road have lately been resumed and are now being pushed forward satisfactorily. Hawera Road-rContract No 6; On this contract the bush is felled throughout, and the clearing is almost completed, Eketahuna-Tinui Road—Contract No, 2, This contract is now,almost completed, the works throughout are fairly well executed. Contract No 3. The earthwork on about sixty chains of this contract is, about three-fourths cempleted, a large number of hands are .employed on the works, which are being pushed forward in a satisfactorymanner. Contract No. 4. About seventy chains of the earthwork on this'.contract are almost finished, several culverts are put.iti/and'th'e materials required for the other culverts .are .delivered on the ground. The works, so far,are.thoroughlywellexecuted. Owing to the unfavorable season, the con : tractors have not-been able to" finish the contract within the specified time, and. they have. applied, for, an .extension; j$o f 3i, l (Mraawa Bridge).' About 10,000 : feet* of timber, the whole df.the ironwork, and the ■necessary t'ooia etc.- for- the erection of this' bridge are delivered at the site, and the works will be proceeded with at once. The remaining 14,000 feet of

timber required for the job is cut artd stacked at tho Taueru. Masterton-WaimataEoad.-Contract No. 1. (Mangapakeha bridge.) About 8000 ft of limber, and nearly tho whole of the required ironwork for this contract are delivered at the site. The balance of the timber required is cut at the Te. Ore Ore mill and will be carted to the'site of the works at an early date. The erection of the bridge will be commenced'at once..' ■ Contract No. 3.' This contract is now completed the works throughout aro well executed. Contract No. .2. (Metalling). On this about, eighteon chains are repaired/and motalled,- and. about half the earthwork on. nine chains of formation'is executed. - Owing to the character of the works'to be executed and the materials to be used, it is very difficult to tell if the works are'only examined from time to : time; whether the provisions of the specification have been faithfully carried out or not. ; I have found,the ruts and depressions filled up with vegetable matter instead of good dry earth, and this plan will be resorted to frequently if the works are not constantly supervised; The gravel that is being used is fairly good good: if well screened, but.otherwise-itisun-suitable. ' .. ■;,-';. TeOre Ore-Bideford Road—Contract No 3 (Tdueriv bridge): A considerable quantity, of timber for tbis.;.bridge ,is prepared—the piles, ifcc, at the. Taueru. and the timber for the trusses at 'the. Akura, mill.. The framing of the trusses are being proceeded with. Contract No 5 (bush- felling): Work on this contract was commenced a few days ago. Dreyer's Rock Road—Contract No 2; Thirty-two chains of the earthwork on this contract are about threefourths completed, and the bush is felled : throughout. Owing to bud weather the contractors have not. been able to finish the work by the specified time, and they have applied for an extension.

.Surveys,—Mr McLnchlan mid party are engaged on road surveys in the Castlepoint Road District. Mr Reariey is superintending works in County West. Mr McLeod has been engaged on a re-survey of road linos through Crown Lands in the Forty-Mile Bush, and in supervising works in County Eust. Agreeably with your instructions, I examined the deviation on the Masterton-Waimata Road suggested by Mr Haiulyside. lam of opinion that the line suggested is the best, and would teg to advise that it be surveyed.
