The Committee appointed on the 29th December to deal with the same have power to let by private con* tract if preferrable, Mr Clifton's protest against the award ot the first prize to Mr Bidwill's milch cow was considered, . It was resolved on the motion of Mr Bunny, Beconded by Mr Mathews, that the protest of Mr Clifton be disallowed, as, in the absence of any rules, the disputed points can only be left in the hands of the judges, and that Mr Clifton be informed that the subject of his protest had been submitted to the judges, who were of course quite unaware of the ownership of the animals, and the result of the reconsideration was to confirm the original verdict. After the presentation, Mr Mathews invited those present to duly christen the cup, which was done in the time-honored fashion with champagne, The task of proposing the health of the chief prizetaker fell to the lot of Mr B. Boys, who paid a very high compliment to Mr Mathews for his flocks of Bomuey Marsh sheep, and hoped that his double success (having won the cup last year) would incite others to go in for the Romney Marsh breed. Mr Boys also alluded to the practice of presenting cups to the successful competitors, be had heard it suggested, and thought it a very good suggestion too, that the amount should be handed over to the Society, and the winner be allowed to have the value in plate or jewellery, and in some cases no doubt tho monoy would be preferable.
Mr Mathews, in returning thanks, thought that after his double success, it was time to retire—(cries of " No, no"). If he went in for competition another year, he would still do his level best, and nothing oh his part would be neglected to insure success, and if he was beaten lie thought Ms victor would well deserve the honor, (Hear! hear I) Mr Buchanan, the President, having now entered the room, a bumper was filled in his honor, and Mr Boys iu proposing his health, alluded to tho great... assistance rendered to the Society by the President and Secretary stating that thero was not a meeting convened but that both were present, in fact he said they were tho lite and soul of the Society, He did not wish to pass over the services rendered by the Committee who had done everything in their power to make it successful, Mr Boys alluded to the letter written to the Daily by Mr McKeever, just after the Isle show, giving advice to the Society, and also to the series of articles written in the papers about the Society's errors, one especially being mentioned, that of tho judging being finished too late. He could say respecting the judging that it j'was far better whon competition was very keen that the public be kept wait, ing than the judging should be done hurriedly to tho injustice of the competitors, He would bo most happy to give way on the Committee to some of those who gave tho Society their advice, but whatever changes they made, he hoped they would always have Mr Buchanan at the head, for do what they would a more painstaking and zealous man they could not get. Mr Buchanan briefly returned thanks saying that he fully appreciated the kind spirit in which his name had been mentioned in connection with the Society.
