FIRE AT AUCKLAND.
LOSS OP LIFE,
Auckland, Wednesday. The Kaipara hotel, at Helensville, and the. Extensive stores of McLeod Bros, were biirned- last night. John Harris, the cook.' and M,ooncy, his assistant, 1 were burned to death. Only Harris' ' body •' was recovered, but several fragments picked up. are discerned as being portions of the other man's body. The public. hall and several private residences were only saved by the efforts of a. number of bushmen who happened' to 1 bo on the spot with axes, and cut the butcher's shop to pieces; 'which were removed, preventing further spread.- The total damage.is several ..thousand pounds.
