TINUI.
I'AM glad to record that our friends, at Whakataki are moving to get a State school ■established there, a. meeting being ihelcl at-the Marine Hotel to take' the preliminary steps in tho matter. Mv McHutcheon generously offers a site for the building, and a sum of £lO was subscribed in the room to assist in tho erection, As there are some, 20 children of school ago in the vicinity the Education Board can scarcely refuse the request, of the settlors to have a school, especially when they are willing to find a portion of the funds, Other small centres of population should follow suit, for up country districts are sadly neglected and unjustly treatedin the matter of free state education, . ' It is ■ quite refreshing •• to see our genial and obliging mailman, Harford, again driving through the district. The roads arc at last in fair order, and both on tho Mangapakeha and Castlepoint lines there is very considerable ; traffic. Lovers of sport are anything, biit delighted at the very curt refusal of : the Hon W, Johnston to allow tho Tinui races to be held on his property, This gentleman owns some 80,000 I acres of land in this district', and yet ;of this, multitude of acres he cannot grant, the use of one small comer for a j two day's race meeting. The public would have thought but little of the [refusal had it come m.'■immediate. response to' a letter from the sec. forwarded somo two months since to the-.,lion.'.and popular gentleman, but when an adverse reply conies on the eve of the races, and when arrangements have been all but perfected it ■is somewhat annoying. Last year a culvert formed of eight planks was put in to improve the course, and wo are many of us exercised to know if the hon, legislator will allow the stewards to remove the timber. However, the race stewards will be equal to the occasion, and a meeting is called for the 19th iust. at the hotel .to take steps to secure another course; that offered by Mr Andrew some time ago. may •probably be selected, While on the race topic, I am glad to. report that subscriptions are coining freely to hand, Mrs Owen's list alone having £7O on it,
The approaching cricket match with the Masterton team is causing some little excitement, The following players will probably, form the local elevenj viz. :-Messrs H. and A, Elder, Walker, Chapman, W; Smith, Chamberlain, Maunsell, Mackay, ilarsli, Nicholls, and Sleemiin, Mr G, Cokcr promises us an entertainment at the Public Hall on the 26th inst. The programme is not yet to hand, but I am informed nigger business, songs comic and sentimental, piano and cornet solo, and a dance wifj be the leading features. I hope this worthy imprcssari will not deem m 6 impertinent if I suggest, to him to obtain the aid of Constable Collertori to keep out gentlemen suffering fronj Tinui alcoholism, who might, if allowed admittance, be quite too awfully' demonstrative in language not too choice. The" improvements to the hotel stables are nearing completion, and will bo a decided boon to tlio travelling part of the community. The annual meeting of householders to elect a new school committee is fixed for the 28th inst., at 8 p.m. Hitherto the attendance at these meetings has been very thin, A little'more interest is desirable, and possibly a little new blood would do no harm in the committee, A frequent topic of - conversation just now is the " sheep blockade," There is an impression that tlio whole district is closed, but this, I am .credibly informed, is,:an -error, the prohibition only applying to sheep passing through from the Napier dis-. triefc. . Very energetic, steps, are -being 1 I taken on the. part of owners; to s(amp I out scab, and already many flocks have received two and threo dips since shearing,,. ; Inspector his, assistants are particularly active in tho discharge of their duties, and it is to be regretted that they have also the rabbit business to work as well, for in the face of inspection coming on in March and; April, ,the scab, ia quite' ; sufficient to,'tax these gentlemen's , energies to the utmost.
Negotiations are pending .between settlers here and Mr J. Vallance.with' the object of securing apiece of"land at the junction of the Mangapakeha and Blaii'logio roads upon which to : erect an accommodation-house, yards, and paddocks for camping stock, This undertaking should commend itself to dealers and drivers of stock, and would fill ft much required want.- The site isan admirable one, and' suited for the settlers south of the Whareania river' as well as those to the north.
