MASTERTON Y. CARTERTON.
A match between the above clubs took place on Saturday last in Mr Geo. Dixon's paddock, and resulted in an easy win for tho home team. The visitors had a very weak team not more than three' of those selected to play turning up, consequently tho captain had to rely upon those he could pick up at the last moment. This shows very bad form on the part of the Carterton crioketers, and unless they back up the energies of their enthusiastic Captain and Secretary (Messrs Bennett and Lawrence), they cannot expect to win back the high position the club once held in the cricket world of the Wairarapa. Messrs Bennett and Harrisoncaptawed the Carterton and Masterton teams respectively. The visitors wont first to the wickets, and the inexperienced batsmen fell an easy prey to Perry, who took eight wickets for seven runs, the innings closing for thirty. Lawrence shewed very good form, and would, with practice, prove troublesome to the bowlers. Bennett still goes in for hard hitting, but his defence showed the want of practice. The Home team put together 105 in their innings, Perry being top scorer with 30, the veteran Hathaway coming next with 24, the only other double figures (beside extras) being Minified 11. The bowling of Bennett and Moore. (both medium paced) was very fair, and proved good enough for the remaining batsmen. Carterton failed to get enough in their second attempt to save a one innings defeat, they being all disposed of for 28 runs, the home team thus winning by an innings and 47 runs to spare.
