ATTEMPTED MURDER AT CARTER. TON.
An attempt at murder ocourred on Wednesday evening on tbe Morton Roid, leading oat of Carterton oaatway, opposite Fairbrotber's store, A man named Alexander Anderson, formerly a cook for Mr Car:, road contraotor, bad been drinking nearly the whole day in Carterton in company with a woman with whom he had been living, While going along the road abovo mentioned they had some' .words, Anderson accusing the woman of not being trao to kirn. From words he got to blows and then deliberately took, hold of her by tho neck and stabbed her with his pocket-knife two or three timeffj saying as he did bo, "If you like anyone better than me you can hive this," A farmer named Edwarda siw the whele affair, bat he seems to have thought discretion the better part of valor, and kept away until Anderson mado off, leaving the woman bleeding profusely. Edwards then went forward and tied all handkerchief round the woman's; neok. Dr Smith was called, who stitched, the wound up, and gave orders for the ivoman to be oonveyed to the hotpitt) at Greytowu, Mr Moore taking her in his trap. Mr Ray, on being round up, statod that Andoraon had called there and aaked for a bod, and on being refused, stated his intention of going to the " milkman's," On arriving at Booth's farm, tho constable called in . at Mr Judd's,. and found that a man and 'a loy had arrived at his house about an hour before, and had askod for lodging, _ slating that they had travolled far and "the' boy was knocked up. This was enough, and Constable Darby at onco arrested him on a charge of attempted murdor. When questioned, tho prisoner \aß very sauoy, and did not appear in(tod to give any account of what had trwfred.—Standard.
