HAWKINS V. BUCHANAN.
TO THE EDIIOK,
Sir—Ho doubt you will booh close this political case as haying gone far enough. But, sir, will yon allow me a few lines in order to give the defendant a character before he is sentenced. I have made it ray business to carefully watch from the strangers' gallery Buohanan's oonduct in the House, and • I can safely say he is the right man for a constituency like the Wairarapa.- He Bpeaks very seldom, and never enters the House without a ! great roll of papers, which I notice is carefully studied by him whilo mon of smoke are making long speeohei, and when, the division bell rang was on the best side. < Ab lam always in the House when any important Bill is being disoussed I am in a position to give Buchanan credit for hisaotion ap to here, and I am of the opinion if Mr Hawkins lowered himself to attend in the Btrangera' gallery occasionally durinc the session it would do him a vast amount of good. Though. I am not a great odmirer of Buchanan, I look opon him as a straight forward, rough and ready colonial of the fight stamp for pushing the'country ahy, Yours, <feo„
