The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1883. PROSPECTING.

Thkku is iift eyojlgs of miners from Terawhiti aj; the presold fijp, ant) the frozen out gold lninters ape finding their way to tho Wairarapa, and endeavoring to preate in this district that desire for mineral with which is t)ie most dangerous form of earth hunger. Terawhiti, during the past winter, has been a sort of mining Paradise. A score of companies have competed for tin! services of men whose avocation is tu disembowel quarto, Thousands and tens of thousands of pounds have been sunk in Terawhiti enterprises, and now a panic having fallen upon shareholders, companies are collapsing, and a sentiment of over-elation has changed to an undue feeling of dejection. Shares in the best Terawhiti claim—the Golden Crown—are now worth but two shillings each, Probably the price of a nobbier would purchase a share in tho pick of all the other companies, As outsiders we fail to see that such extreme depression in the value of a claim like the Golden Crown is warranted.. Its phases of becoming a profitable enterprise are apparently as good now as when its shares were selling at ten times the price at which thoy are now obtainable, There are doubtless some bad mining eggs in tho Terawhiti nest, and one Jiko the Golden Crown which bids fair to hatch is discredited by the company in which it is found. An effort, is now being made in Masterton to obtain ways and means for a party of prospectors to visit our own ranges, Tho season of the year is extremely favorable for a trip to the bills, which environ us, and if we aro to beliovo the tales of pioneers Who have on various occasions ascended these mountains there is an excellent chance of Ending alluvial gold, a certainty of obtaining quartz, and a strong probability of securing auriferous quartz, In spit.e of all this there is a \yant of enthusiasm on tlje part of, -the Wairarapa public, The cold ohill 1 which lias fallen on Terawhiti, in spite of tlie cake of gold which was crushed out of the Golden Crown, has apparently infe.cted this district. Still, we believe that there will yet fre a royiyal in mining enterprise, that Terawhiti will yet vindicate its claim to be called a gold field, and that some day the Wairarapa ranges will be tunnelled, All this is but a question of time, but we have little hope of it being immediately brought about, The Terawhiti scare may last a few months, longer, Public confidence has been shaken in this field by the large sums of money which have been misspent in it. rather than by the want of results from the money which has been judiciously expended. "We - would gladly see prospecting undertaken in this district, but'we fear that till the Terawhiti experiment is brought to a more > successful issue prospecting parties will meet with but smiill encouragement,
