CRICKET.
had real cricket w'eatKer.'yesferday for their opening match, and there was; a fair muster of both married and''single members to do battle for their respective sides. • .-"- _ The captain of the Club (Mr Harviaon) led the. Benedicts, who proved themselves by far the best men; the viee-captain (Mr Perry): having charge of the batchelors. I Messrs W. Dixon and C. de Castro officiated as umpires. There was a large number of specta-toi-s present, whose'criticism and advice to the debutants were at times rather, severe and perplexing,; The principal features of the match were the bowling and fielding: the former being very good.; McKenzie and Harrison for the winners, and Perry and Welch for the losers making good averages. The fielding all round was passable, a great improvement being noticeable towards the close of the game. There was no great display of batting, the only time that any life was infused into the game was at the commencement of the second innings of the Benedicts, when Messrs Moore, Beard Harrison and. Williams put' together about forty 1 runs between them, the latter making top score of the day, and also proved very useful as longstop. Miniie. as longstop in the second innings of the married, elicted repeated praise for his excellent play, his absence during the first innings being a great loss to the' singles, There was a promising turn, out of " colts," which augurswellfor the Club's future. It :is tq.behoped they' will'attend" well to practice, and'improve on the form; they Bhowe'daUhe opening matoh, and ■now they have such a convenient practice ground there will be no.excuse for them; f'iWith the new additions to the: Club's ranksj and the material they had in hand, there is the making of an eleven that ought to give as good an account of themselves this, season as last seasons players did who won three out of the four matches they played; Members can practice every afternoon, the general practice days, . being Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, The following are the'scores :
