LOAVES.
(TO THE EDITOR), Sir.—lt may be premature for me yet to allude to thia matter, not having seen the Act in question, viz., The Adulteration Prevention Aot Amendment, 1883, but I would ask you to explain what to me appears to be an inconsistency. In clauses 4th and sth, published in your iBHUO of Ist inst,, 1' read that after the passing of this Aot no; baker or seller of bread shall make sell, or offer for sale ; any < bread not made up into French loaves!,or batch loaves &c,, (on reading this one would imagine the colony just emerging from the stage of rautiorr and 'damper)," and sth if any baker or seller of bread shall toll or offor for sale any bread, in any other manner than in French or batch loaves, and he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding A n d does this not' clearly abolish the leaking of fancy bread? further: Nothing, in thii! Act extend or apply to bread of the olaas known as fancy bread,. What does this mean? If no broadbutFrenoh and batchiloaves be fflade are hotel-keepfirs or baardinghoupe-keepers ofpriyate families at jjherty to of any shape they tjqd if so in thp baker or person? deliyenng samp, liable for go doing ! I am not finding fault the Aot.. How it will operate Remains to be seen. It !b both just and right that the publio should be promoted from fraud. and impbsition, and that they Bhotild receive'wbftt thoy pay for both in quality and quantity, but sometimes Acts are so framed that jh the. working o.f them they become oppressive to ,th<*t p'fwp of tityjesmen with they.deal, f!i{U lam^o,, Loam*.
