CANTERBURY LIVE STOCK MARKET.
Messrs H. Maison and Co, report on , the Livo Stock Market, &c, for tin week ending Tlmtsdny August IC, n follows: ' Fur yestordays marked at Addingloi ' nbout n medium supply nf sheep came d hand, the entry 1»' ; m» principally raatli I up of heavy prime quality cms < breda, with a few hits of lighter weights i and merino wothors. Thu silo opened ( firmly, with an indication of high ruling ratoa; but the result, although fairly ' satisfactory, wsb to a certain extern marred by tho irregularity of biddings < and iho unevenness of values. It is truo that in sovoral instances 20a por head and upwards was paid for the best lines of wethers on offer, but from tho fact that moat of the buyers for export hail met their requirements, competition for this class of Bheep was noticeably less brisk than last week and prices somewhat weaker, more especially towards the closo of the sale. Owing to the preponderant of heavy mutton, lighter classes were more in request for local purposes, prices being marked by an improvement rather than otherwise. Tho supply of merino, wothors was limited to one or two lines, all of which were cleared off at rates 2s to 3s per head higher than at any market for thu past month or six weeks, As,quotations of the day's sale, thu best and heaviest cross-bred tvothers brought 18s to 21s; medium weights and mixed aoxos 14s in 16s Cd; merino wethers 9s to 13i, oi equal to from 2fd to 3d per lb, according to quality. Li stores, the placing of « line «r t:iir conditioned merino wethers at OYand (ii Id, a consignment of cross-bred ewes in lamb at 14s, ami another lot of sged and cross-bred ewes at 8s Gd were about all the transactions for tho day, In boef tbure was but ,i limited entry, the quality varying from medium to prime. A better demand was noticeable lhau fur many weeks past, almost every line being cleared at an advance of 10s to 20* per head on late market rules. Si em brought £6 10s to £8 10s por head; heifers and heavy weight cows, £6 to £lO or equal to a quotation of from 21s fur inferior to 25s per lOOlbs for the best cattle. In Btnre oitile iheru is as yot very little doing, but if the warm growing weather of the past week continues for another fortnight, wainsy expect to see the commencement ot no enquiry, which will undoubtedly grow into an extensive one during the coming spring.
