CORRESPONDENCE.

(TO THE EDITOR,)

Sir—ln your leader of the 23rd iust, ] referring to the County liabilities that will devolve upon the Road Boards in the event of the County Act being suspended, you state that you are assured "that the Chairman of the Masterton Road Board has privately gitfen pledges' in this direction." . I beg leave to say that the Chairman of the Masterton Road Board has neither committed himself or the Board by any such proceeding. It. will be time enough for him to fiQt when the question comes before [ the Board. The question which is. now agitating tho mind of the County is not one of County Councillors and members of the fibad Board, but of ratepayers and the Counties '. Act. As a ratepayer, I may be allowed to express an opinion that so the liabilities of the County are fairly apportioned among the several local bodies, it will be a matter of little moment to the ratepayer, They can-' not escape their respectiyo shares of Hie responsibility; but they can cut them.short as they stand, and so provent those liabilities from being indefinitely increased, and rendered so complicated as to make the suspension ',of the Counties Act at some future day practically impossible. I am, etc;,
