WOODVILLE.
(PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The first and most important event of the month has been the " Woodville Gathering." Host Murphy, of the Woodville Club Hotel, gave a ball and supper in celebration of the c6mple : tion of alterations and enlargement of his.fcouse, About 100 persons sat down to a sumptuous' supper—or rather' dinner—provided with every luxury obtainable. Mr McNeil, of Palmerston North, was in the Chair, Mr A. B.Jackson Vice-Chairman. After the usual loyal toasts, the Chairman proposed the toast of success to the Woodville Club Hotel, and in doing so referred, to the time when his camp "(for he was the contractor for the road) was situated where we now beheld this grand Hotel; and he had no hesitation iri saying it was the best between Wellington, and Wanganui j and he doubted if Wariganui could-produce its equal; He congratulated the district' ijpon havingsuchah enterprising hotelkeeper as host Murphy. Of course the toasts were all duly honored, and dancing, commencing at About 0 o'clock, was'kept going with spirit till two o'clock, in the morning, everyone appearing to have, enjoyed the evening thoroughly. ... .'The framework of the new bank is hbw "up, and the contractor seems, pushing'forward his job to have the tank opened "iff three months, according to contract time. It will improve 'the 'appearance of'the .corner wonder- .-.; Several new buildings are going up hi the township, but what they are "going to be I don't know. I am' afraid they are going to overdo this place, and that soon it will ho overrun with stores without customers. I shall predict in two or-three years time you will be able to obtain land and building sites at about one half of what' they are fetching at the present time. ''. The roads are being fearfully cut up 'with the drays bringing up the cement .for the new bridge oyer the Manawatu. The Gorge, road is knee .deep in good soft sludge; Mr McKenzie's new public house . will be opened next Wednesday. The contractor is pushing it along, and the paperhangers and painters are very busy doing the internal portions,
The Wdodville School Committee after, twelve months advertising, <fcc., have .obtained the services of Miss Frame, a lady of high testimonials, as assistant mistress : to our school. May she improve the tone and teaching powers for it,needs.a thorough.reorganisation.', /Under the; present management it obtained the unenviable reputation cf being the worst school in the Hawke's Bay District. .• ; I see Government has placed asum on the estimates for building'a Court House for Woodyille, and granted two J.P.'s, and a quarterly E.M. Don't we: want a lawyer 1 The Woodvillo Christy /Minstrel troupe gave an entertainment in aid of a widow lady, and handed'over £5,, the 'result, May they live to give many more for as charitable a purpose,
