Kaikoura, July 10.
To-day, Walter Gibson, lessee of the Warden and Tylerßuns, was'cliarged with being tho owner of 40,000 infected sheep. The offence was admitted. The evidence showed that defendant had only been in possession 20 months, but had almost stamped out the disease in the time. One flock of 30,000 was qnito clean, and the remainder nearly so, It was shown that the infected portion was scabbed' by shebp straying from Crown lands of an inaccessible nature to man, and the Sheep Inspector admitted that' the defendant, had done his uttnost to clean b,is run, One shepherd had lpst ; his ljfe ; through efforts put forth to clean his sheep. Tho Bench, in giving judgment, said he must inflict the minimum penalty of 3d per sheep. The fine amounts to 1500. 'The Bench promised to recommend the Minister of Justice to make a partial remission of the fine.
Napier, Wednesday. Tho schooner Transit, 70 tons, Galloway master, bound for Lyttelton with a cargo of guano, put in here last Friday with a broken main boom, They sent the broken boom and main sail aarjorg, and anchored in the roadstead. 4- northeast :gale sprang up on Monday, increasing yesterday with fury, with a high sea, Last night the gale moderated, bill t])e sea still continued high. The, Transit which was riding to two anchors about two a.m. broke both cables, and the; vessel went ashore on '• Pctane beach, As the vessel neared the breakers, tho 'crew of six hands took to the rigging, and all got ashore, One man was thrown to the deck when the vessel struck and was rather badly hurt, but was, however, safely landed. The sea is now going down, but the vessel has become a total wreck. Later.
The Marine Department has received a telegram stating that the schooner Transit, wrecked at Napier, ,w»s uninsured. The cargo, however, was insured,
