FATAL ACCIDENT.
A terrible accident occurred on Wednesday ( evening .last at Moroa, near Greytown, by which a little girl named Annie Kelly lost her life. It appears that as Messrs, Wakelin and Hawkins' timber waggon was being driven towards Grey town by'a'man named Wishart, three children commenced a too common practice—that of climbing on tho waggon behind, unknown to the driver, who was startled by the screams of the children, and found upon stopping that the little girl Kelly, had got her legs entangled in the'wheels, and was fearfully mutilated, The flesh-was torn from the small of the, back'arid legs;more particularly one leg, which was broken in
sevoral places, the knee bone protruding, and smashed, In fact, the injuries were too fearful to-paiticularise them. minutely. Mr Brooks, who was work!* ing near, heard the screams and was quickly on the spot, and medical attendance was instantly sought. Dr Spratt soon made his appearance ; but he saw at a glance that the child could not live mote than a y couple of hours, and was loath to interfere with the poor little thing in its dying state, but upon being re<- * peatedly urged to do j something he consented uporicondition that another medical man was present. .Dr Taylor/1 consented to go in the absence' of 'Dr ■ Bey, but upon arrival they found that the poor child had been eased of all pain by the great deliverer—Death, The accident occurred at about four o'clock and the child lived until 10 , o'clock; The child was only five yearpi j old and the daughter of David Kelly, a carpenter, who was away from homo when tluV accident occurred.'' f '-Aa inquest will be held to-day.
