R.M. COURT.
. .' MASTERTON—THIS DAY.' (Before His Worship the Mayor and Mr E. Tqomath, J.P.) Edward Barker was charged with assaulting Middleton Anderson on the 2nd inst. The defendant pleaded not guilty, - The informant stated that he was night porter at the Empire Hotel. About 12.30 this morning, the accused came and asked him 'for a bed. Witness asked him -for eighteenpence for the bed. The accused did not, produce the money, witness asked him to clear out. The accused then lay down on the floor,: Witness tried to put him out when accused-kicked-at him and 'used threatening language. He tore his clothes and struck: him on the nose. ; To the accused: Did not try to choke you when you lay on the floor. • The accused taking off his coat and showing a'big rent, said " What do you call that? who did that] v Constable Leahy said he arrested the prisoner, At the time, the nose of the
•,-last fitness; :Wftß cut and bleeding, f;Mr Oorbett.requested liira to remove .the prisonerifrom the houae. The accused'was iii liquor but not drunk, The accused said he had spent all his'money and wonted a bed on credit. He was knocked up and could not return to the Camp, where his home was, The Court considered the assault a serious one, and fined the defendant 40s or 14 days' imprisonment with hard labor.
