GREYTOWN BUTTER AND CHEESE FACTORY CO.
The first annual.meeting:of the,, shareholders in the above-company was held at the Wairarapa- Institute on Friday evening last, Mr W. C. Buchanan in the chair, and .about sixteen shareholders being present. The Chairman read, the advertisement convening the meeting, and called upon the Secretary, Mr F. H. Wood, to read the minutes of the-last general meeting, which were confirmed. The Chairman read the report and balance sheet as followp :~ : '"■' REPORT,"'..'' In submitting balance sheet for the •.■ ... year just ended, your Directors have . . the honor to report'that immediately, after their election they arrangedvto:-, '.leasefrom MessrsE, and C.-Hollard, :., three acres of land fronting .the main ,••.:■:•• road near .the station with a house and stabling, for■••■.':.. a term of ten years, at a renM.pf £l2 ■ per annum, with a purchasing clause* of £2OO, and after much consideration decided to erect an entirely new building for factory purposes, in preference to altering, the building, already in existence, it being thought that the house would be useful as a residence for the manager. Plans were accordingly prepared, and tenders called for the work, Messrs Trotman k (the lowest) for £237 10s accepted. It .was thought advisable to confine the Company's attention for the present to cheese making, and the necessary plant was procured. A ' strong effort was made to procure tho services of a practical man accustomed to the factory system of making cheese, as manager, but without success. It . : was then decided to engage the pre- ■■■■•>■- Bent manager,' MrT. W.,Shaw, and send him to the Edendale Factory in .: the Invorcargill district, to get an insight into factory work. The experiment proved a decided success, as is shown by the first-class article he has succeeded in turning out. Your Directors decided to allow 4|d per gallon for milk delivered at th'e factory, and charge Jd per gallon for the whey . to those who wished to purchase it. The Factory was opened \ and commenced operations en the 2nd of January last, and owing to,: the falling off in the milk supply, mainly consequent on the high price of butter, it was found necessary to close it on the 10th of March. During the-time (ten . weeks) 11,426 gallons of milk were re- ' ceived, and 4 ton 7 cwt of oheeso made. • Your Directors though unable io declare a dividend this .year, (which under the circumstances could hardly be expected), still feel justified in congratulating shareholders on tho success- ■ ful starting of the Co., and also on the fact that, notwithstanding the many drawbacks and hindrances which must of necessity attend the starting of any new enterprise, they have succeeded in turning out an article which will bear favorable comparison with any cheese as yet made in vtlie .colony! This is proved by the...'high price' realised, as in the face>6f large quantities of good Canterbury cheese being offered in Wellington at from 6d to6£d per lb, the bulk of the Company's cheese has been sold at 7d < to! 7|d per. lb. The Company was started with a • nominal capital of £IOOO in £l shareß, :. but as yet only 704 shares havo been ■■■.-: taken up, leaving 296 shares for dis- ■ posal, and it is hoped that these will - soon be applied for. Your Directors cannot conclude without acknowledging ■• tho valuable assistance rendered by Mr .••■■. Wakelin in the preparation of plans, •. for building and superintending the erection of same. In moving the adoption of the report, tho Chairman referred, to various items appearing in the balance sheet, and explained that tho whole working expenses since tho starting of the Company had been charged against the 10 weeks in which the Factory was working, and porting out that had only the expenses during that period Ween charged, the result would show a-net . profit of £lO, Mr St. George seconded the adoption? V-".-<v of the report and balance sheet'which ~-.. was carried unanimously, ' The election of directors 'wasvthen..: . proceeded with, the following, gentle: .': ..-.•' men being declared duly elected:—; ••■ MessrsW.C Buchanan, W.Udy S. •,-,'•• Haigh. C. Phillips, J. Juddr M. Gasel: :. berg, and G. Hollard. The election of auditors was next proceeded with, Messrs Skeet and .:. Wyett being elected, and a fee af £2 . 2s each fixed. A vote of thanks to.the retiring • Directors was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to.the Chairman • concluded the meeting.
