.'/ \ RIFLES, : A match between the above corps was ■fired'at the Manaia'butts on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the visitors by twenty-four points. The weather was bright and dry; and favorable for good shooting. A strong breeze-was blowing down the range at the commencement of the match, but changed round -when tbe firing was about half through and blew across it, Lieut. Lyon was ''in' command of the Artillery and Captain Donald of tbe local corps. As only, eight of the visiting team arrived on Friday night the match was started eight a-side, at the finish of which the Artillery were only two points a-head, Gunner. Holmes and Corporal Turner arriving, by the mid-day train on Saturday, Sergt. Wilton and Yol, Freeth 'fired the conclusion of the match with them. Sergt. Wilton scored the same ta. his opponent, but Vol-Freeth fell two behind his, consequently the visitors' lead was increased to twonty-four. Bombardier McKenzie made -the ..brilliant score of 64, getting the possible at 200 yards. , Captain. Donald ''. and Corporal Kutchen were next, with ,58 each, the latter being top scorer ut the longest range. Lieut.Lyon, onbehalf of his.corps, thanked, the, Masterton team for the cordial reception they had given them, and said the result was more than they had anticipated,, Rowing the reputation .their opponents had gained.' He hoped tbe return mateh. would be arranged as soon as possible, and fired this season, and would like to see matches fired annually, between .the two .corps. Captain Donald, in reply, said.the Masterton corps would like the return match to be fired this season as several of the team xould not get away in the summer, He said they would be most happy to arrange for an annual match with the Artillery corps.
