(FROM our own correbpokoknt,) •■. ■ ■ May 23. Is & ew dayatbo petition to the Counoil re constituting this place a hew Eoad District' will te forwarded, Some say the Council will not receive this applica* favorably. There w no,reason why ' they should not.. An outlying district ' like'this extending to the boundary of the Province, and removed from the centrefarthor than any other outlying district in the County should, of all places, he permitted to govern itself in such matters as reads and rates since'this cannot be really and thoroughly dine by a .body compoßofl .-. chiefly of simmers to the district, and , sitting at a distance from it. Had we '';. had a Road Board a month ego we should 1 have thrown a few loads of metal jOfi' the wont parts of the Tiraumea road, A .;,small expense would; have.done great good,. It would have been so arranged , also that the settlers living oloso by would have had, the job; not havinß a locaL i Board, thework, which • would have -./ benefited thesettlers-dora-that line so ~moob, ,waa not undertaken, and-;if : it had wpuid,', no'doubt,,'have been '.; sent .up from Mastertorj, Maurieeville, or "any where instead of employing them on v the spot, Even if Pabiatua settlers are not great and shining lightslamconfidenj that they'would not commit Bach a mistike'asrtaJpng;csM?. to lfew(ai.t|o. tua is represented by two members in the County Ouimoil-Messrß Beethamjand McOardle. We think .that Mr Beutham ! will assist us to gain our and if i: is only beoause every ratepayer iB in favor of a local Board ;'ai,d. there is n'.uluubl thai when all the ratepayers in. the district uskt for a Board th'ey. should-'havo one. We. cannot quite ascertain whether iMr McCardle is for or against'us.' He certainly encouraged tho step at tho last ptibho meeting and all that sort of thing, but from what is said, ho has since discovered that helping us to Ret a Boad Board is helping us, into trouble. Pooh.! I can't understand liow anyone can m orr as to suppose this. The smallest cuicoptinn of politidal economy, of division of labor, every argument «ut local government—all these should prove what auyone who reasons fairly' inuat admit requires no. proof. . ,Wo are unanimous in our. opinion, and in this lies our strength. If we are erring, wo' all err together. We are not taking this step in trie-dark or in a hurry. We know what responsibilities we are offering to lake upon ourselves. We know that Bhould we. be incompetent in bearing tliem, wo shall be the sufferers and hiive ourselves to blame. Lastly, we have not arrived at this decision all of a suddeu, for we have been waiting seven montliß, and our resolutions are not only unaltered but, on tho contrary, stronger than ever.
