DUNEDIN, April 8. ; The Salvation Army seem to be making progress. This afternoon, after the open-air meeting in the Octagony ft" procession of twelve or fifteen persons,' including some men • and one woman, fell in, and marched to the barracks, singing a hymn by the way. Several people have had the army badge.on their breasts for somo days. The larrikins make the indoor meetings' very rowdy, but now a sergeant and constable keep order. HANNAH BARRATT.. WemhgtoN) Monday. . A quantity of wreckage has been picked up in the bay near Terawhiti, It comprises a life buoy with " Hannah Barratt, Wellington" painted on it,
part of a boat's fitting, two pars, and whatappears to be the.remains of; a hatch. /-Theschp Barratt' left here iri ballast on ; Monday leist-for Picton to load timber, and as no' word' has arrived 6l her reaching there, itisfeared that the little vessel has met with some disaster as some very heavy southerly weather was experienced shortly after her leaving this port. The Hannah Barratt is a topsail schooner of 57 tons, and; is owned and commanded by Capt Frederich Keimer. Her crew was ; A, : Carlson, P, Fisk, and; Andrew Sahloper. •CaptainEdie, of the Wanaka, reported on arrival here from Lyttelton on last Wednesday, that on Tuesday night 'he: passed a large floating object which resembled either the back of a whale or a small vessel bottom upwards, but it was too dark to say. positively. :i
CHBiSTOHUROHy Monday. Three cottages were burned at Philipstown early this morning, Two of: them were four-roomed cottages, which belonged to Alonzo Kingshear, carpenter, who lived in one of them, the other being empty. They were insured in the South British for 4125 each. The third house, the property of J. A. _ Willey, coach trimmer, was unoccupied, and insured in the Union office for L2OO. Kingshear's furniture was insured but saved frora the firo. ■' The N.Z. Shipping Company's s,s. British King, the first of direct line of steamers to England sailed early yesterday morning, with 112 passengers and full cargo including 6198 carcases of frozen mutton, 7478 sack's wheat, 3038 bales wool, and skins. Sailed—Bialto for United Kingdom.

Nelson, Monday. A young man named Prank Hodgson, against whom a warrant was issued in Ootober last on a charge of embezzling the National Bank in 1881, has been arrested, and was charged before the Magistrate this morning and remanded. He evaded the police for a long time but was eventually captured in the neighborhood of Felorus Sound. A lad named Holland had his fingers and the palm of his right hand shattered by an explosion of half-pound of gunpowder with which he and five other boys were playing.
