TO THE EDITOR WAIRARAPA DAILY.

Sir,—The sad occurrence of Saturday nigljfc should have (and doubtless has) impressed on the mind of every individual who has an interest in the- township the imperative neoeßsity of an adequate water supply along' the main thoroughfare foi\ the suppression of fires; ' With (lie Waipoua river at one endj and • Eehall'a creek at the other,- there is : no : reason ' (save that of cost) why, one should not be eonriected.with the other by a main, the said main' feeding wells sunk -at convenient distances along the'.street'for the firemen to drop their hose into. If there had been ahy breeze at all on Saturday night, the lire would havo got suoh a hold on the adjoining buildings that the efforts of oi)r two, small engines would have been futilo to have stopped it.;, and with this undeniable arid grim fact staring us in the face, it behoves every < property-holder in the town to agitate for a water supply, at once, even if a special rate lias to be struck to-defray the expense of 'obtaining it. I would suggest that" the surplus money in the hands of the Town Lands; Trust, be devoted to this object. The monies derived from the Trust Lauds are'supposed to be expended for the general public good, and l am sure that' the majority of the ratepayers, would be oiily too glad to see it spent for that, purpose. Of course there would be opposition to this scheme by a few, interested individuals, who would like to see tho money tunk in a town hall, so. that they could indulge in a little cheap, eloquence occasionally; also by one or two old fossilswho always object to mohey being spent for. anything, and who have an idea that the only use it thould be put to is to lend it out at about-fifteen per cent. I sincerely, hope that our worthy Mayor will bririg tliiT matter before the at, .their next meeting, arid'.that they will take steps at otice' alier; the present state of thinge.';'|Otherwiße, ! 'we' shall be waking up some'fino morning and finding ourselves, famous throughout the length and breadth of New Zealand;;; Yours, etc., • Ratepayer.
