RAVAGES BY WILD BEASTS IN INDIA.
It sounds appalling to read that during hit year no leu than 21,427 human beings were killed in India by wild animals or wakes. In looking, however, at this heavy total, regard must be had to the enormous population of India—24o,ooo,ooo, or 260,000,000; snd the proportion will than be teen to be small. ■ The total is, slightly less than that of 18S0, when close upon 22,000 persons perished in the fierco, struggle for existence between men and wild animals; and many less cattle were lost, tlio number being 43,609 last ytar against 58,816 in tho preceding year. Analysing the returns for 1881, we find that 58 deaths wero caused by elephants,889 by tigers, 239 by leopards, 75 by boars, 256 by wolves, 8 by hyenas, 1,232 by " other animals," whilst snakes are let down as having caused 1 the death of 18,670 individuals. Man, however, ex acttd a terrible revenge, Over 90 000 rupees wore paid last year for the des ; (motion of wild animals, and these, we find, comprised 2 elephants, 1,557 tigers, 8,397 leopards, 991 bears, 4,538 wolf es, 1,014 hyenas, 8,790 other animals, and 254,968 snakes—or more, than ten wild animals for evory human life lust.
