THE MASTERTON MUNICIPAL MEETING.

The Masterton Municipal meeting, though numerously attended last evening was a wretched fiasco. It would have collapsed within a quarter of an hour but for the intervention of Messrs Renall, Woodroofb and Russell, who are always ready to air their eloquence. Messrs Corbett and Chinohen, the Municipal candidates were not prepared with addresßes, and the bulk of the evening was taken up with one of Mr Recall's free and easy no-as-you-please speeches, This address, after eliminatipg that portion which was devoted to sftlf-glonfjca-tion, declared the 'Borough of Masterton to be in a pitiable state, but suggested no remedy for the dilapidations which are now so obvious. Last year the Masterton Borough Councillors had a good opportunity of putting the town in a state of efficiency by raising a small loan. Thsy differed,-however, so muoh among themselrea that the project fell, through, and for the present Masterton must necessarily remain one of the dirtiest and most unhealthy inland Boroughs of New Zea-

land,, Wbeu.w'e' have wallowed in';the; mud a little a liiile longer public opinion may be roused to take the town out of the 'i slough icwhioh it iiow lies. Maitertbn'j will yet, we believe, be made presentable, by means of a small loan judiciously expended, Next winter will probably carry conviction on this point to the minds of a majority of the burgesses. Applications are invited by the Education Board for appointments in the Knitoke, Waihakeke, Carterton, and Olarevilie schools, The Justices sit at i Carterton to-day, The Court list is a very light one. The gates of the Tauherenikau Raoes have been Bold to Mr R, MoFarlane for Mr W. T. Dunn, who has become so well known at Fealherston and its neigh-' borhood for the good quality of his bread; has an advertisement in another column. The Maßtortoq Softool Committee meets this evening. Mr E Petersen notifies that his cheap sale of boots and shoes will continue for fourteen days longer, In the Dunedin Baces Bundoora is scratched for all engagements, Cookery's ponies will leave the Club Hotel for the races at 8 a.m. to-morrow. To-morrow a train leaves Masterton at 0,80 a.m. for the races. The ordinary train at 2,5. p.m. will be delayed till 5 p.m. Single tickets will be available for the return journey on both racedaya,,, ,; A poll takes place in Masterton to-day, for the return of cither Mr Chinohen or Mr Corbett to the Borough Counoil. A very considerable number of votes are unlikely to be reoorded. Those that are, polled aro likely to be pretty evenly 'divided. Messrs Robertson and Co,, of tho ; Yiotoria Foundry, have almost completed, a twenty five horse-power horizontal boiler and ongine for Messrs Terry and Baillie's Bawmill, near Greytown, and will forward it to Kb destination in a day or two, The Sunday School picnio of St, Matthew's Church will take place in Mr Judd's paddock on Friday next. The admission before dinner will be half-a-crown, in the afternoon, eighteen penceChildren will be charged at half-price, The Government have decided that in all cases where the whole of.(he members of Licensing Committees have not been elected, the election is void, and it then rests with the Governor to nominate the whole committee. There is a capital attendance at Messrs' Lowes and lorns' auction sale to-day, but prices, owing to the continuance of dry weather and consequent scarcity of feed, rule rather low. Cross-bred wethers were sold at from 6s 9d to 7a 4d, and fat sheep at from 8s to 8s 9il. The sale was proceeding at the hour of our going to press, The custodian of the Masterton Hospital acknowledges the receipt of gifts of books from Mr J, Bennett of Otahuao, Mr Deveneisb, of Brancepeth, and Mr Lundqvist of Masterton in response to a request we recently published of the desirability of a few works being contributed for the use of patients. The meeting held at Mr T. Thompson's office last evening for the purpose of forming a local christy minstrel troupe was well attpuded.. It was decided that ihe company should be termed the Masterton Ethiopian Seren'aders, and that it consist of twelve members. Ifr m . Thompson was elected stage manager and Treasurer, and Mr J, Bentley was appoinled Secretary.. Regular practice nights were arranged, and in a month or six weeks time the Masterton public hiay expect to hear a little more of this looal bund. To-morrow arid the next day, as is very well known, the leading race club of the district celebrates (heir suturrji) meeting at Tauherenikau, and it is pleasing to know that everything tends to its being more than ordinarily successful, The race track, thanks to the recentrain, is in splendid condition and owners are jubilant over the prospeot of good racing and fast time. The difficulty of spotting the winners from the numerous list of acceptances is perplexing those who pretend to know, to such an extent, that it is pardonable for us to omit hazarding an opinion on coming; events Our sporting scribe in fact says he would rather be exoused, prefering that each one should back his fancy, to following any tip of bis, as the various events are so open, Hill and Pool's Totaljsator, will be worked at the meeting, so that intending investors may have an opportunity of speculating through "the machine which cannot lie," An efficient band has been engaged, the teleHiaph office is to be open, and the weather, too, which is a never-failing source of anxiety to all promoters of outdoor gatherings, now appears settled, so that those on pleasure bent are likely to enjoy their visit to Tauherenikau. In conclusion we repeat may the racing be good, the attendance large, and may the best horse always wiu. It was resolved that Mr Porritt be requested to withdraw his resignation, it was reported that thirty volumes had been added to tho Library during the month, Moat of our readers are acquainted probably with the red-tape delays of the Civil Service, but the following paragraph from Van}ty Fair shows' tl)at"we are n'o worse off than those gtifl left in the Old gouiitry': —" It may interest some readers {» know, the roundabout way in which small articles are supplied to Her Majesty's ships at the dock-yards, A little while ago the Channel Fleet arrived in Encland, The flagship went to Portsmouth, and the three other shiijS to Plymouth, to undergo necessary repairs, The other day the copyingmachine in the pay-master's office in one of the Plymouth ships waswornout.and the paymaster at once set about gettiug a new one, To begin with he made out on a form a demand for the artiole to be surveyed, Bnd signed it himself.
