The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1883. THE COUNTY ELECTIONS.

Mr McCardle in another column points out that we attached in our leader of Monday last an undue importance to the Pahiatua interest in the Alfredton Riding. We were somewhat in error in classifying the Bush settlements under the title of Pahiatua, but the idea we desired to convey was a right one. The Alfredton Riding consists of the original Alfredton set tlement, which has passed its first decade, and the more recently established settlements along the FortyMile Bush road, We hold that the Alfredton settlers have a claim to return one representative for their section of the riding, and that the settlers on the Forty-Mile Bush road should fill the other seat, Mr McCardle professes himself willing to represent all parts of the riding, and no doubt he would ttrive to do so, but Mr McCardle has a direct personal interest in one section of the riding, and no direct interest in tho other portion of it, and it is evident that he will make a better representative for the former than for the latter. We may add another word respecting the contest in the Masterton Riding. We are informed that an intimation was given to Mr T. E. Chamberlain that his candidature would not be opposed if he stood aloof from his late colleague Mr McGregor. Mr Chamberlain, however, declined to secure his election by an act of disloyalty to a colleague in whom he had confidence. This episode speaks volumes in favor of Mr Chamberlain's integrity and straightforwardness. Jt also indicates the estimation in which Mr McGregor is held by one who is most familiar with his public career. The riding will do honor to itself by re-electing Messrs Duncan McGregor and T. E, Chamberlain.
