A professor was showing a party of ladies and gentlemen over some large ■works at Birmingham, chiefly engaged in the manufacture of complicated optical instruments. 'J he parly came across a very ingenious instrument, the •working of which the professor proceeded to explain. I n the midst of his exposition a roughly dressed young mau standing near struck in, and civilly pointed out that the man of science was quite mistaken in his notions as to the instrument in ques tion. The professor whose weak point is not an excess <•'! humility, angriiy maintained his own view, but did not succeed in convincing his opponent. who finally shrugs .1 lus shoulder* and walked oil".
" Who is tli.it-'.-litt parson 1" asked the professor, indignantly of it workman standing by. "Oh, that is Doctor X," was the reply.. "He invented that instrument you have been looking at." Tableau.
