(fKOM A CORRKSPONDENT.) . 1 - Doxedin, December 14. At 9.p.m,, ; a8 engine No, 25 was coming over . Castle-Blrest crossing, awan who was waiting apparently, for the train to pass, 'threw himself in front 'of the. engine) and was run over and cut to pieces. The shuntetjand signalman were standing on the crossing, but the action of the man being so sudden they were unable to prevent what is evidently a determined case of suicide. The train'was goin? very slowly, and was pulled np when about half the vehicles had passed over the body. The remains wero at once got Out, but oannot be identified at present. This will be difficult owing to the mangling. The man appears to have been a half-caste, a young man, and in poor circumstances. : ;
RACING. Ohrtstohoroh, this day. At a meeting of the C.J.O. committee yesterday it was resolved to erase the C.J.C. Handicap from the programme of the Spring Meeting, and substituted a raca to be called the New Mtnd Handicap of 20 sots, each with 1900 sovs added, sccon I horse lOOsovs, third SOsova. It was also decided to have two steeplechases at the Autumn j Meeting, one of 200 sovs added to sweepstake of 10 soty and another the Hunt Cup Trophy of 50 sovs aud 60 sovs in specie.

In September last the Premier wrote to Mr Griffin, U.S. Consul of N.Z.. who was proceed'ng to America, asking him, if it would not inconvenience him, to make enquiries into the details of the me it preserving business which was carried on in Chicago, especially : as to the cost of tho plant for making tins, and for compressing meatus wellih the expenses' connected with each branch of the wo k when a factory was in average operation.A reply dated November 11 was received by last mail from a large firm in Chicago, iu which tliey state it would bp difficult to give any detail items of interest without specific questions. However, they, coujd say iu general that from their stand point the chief obatucle of makiut; tho business remunerative in New Zealand would be the difficulty of marketing cuts of fresh meat, without this market to render it possible to dispose of ribe and loins they thought that tho canning business would have to bo carried on at a disadvantage. If the best cuts of teefcould bo marketed the canning business might 'he carried on profitably.

It originated iu a hay loft attached to the Hibernian Hotel, and there is reason for suspecting a worthless fellow named Phillip Pennell who slept in the loft and caused the fire either by accident or desißn.
