NATIVE TROUBLE, With regard to the destruction of the bridge'and tramway by the natives.at Takapau, in the Hawke's Bay district, tho following further particulars have been ascertained:—At daybreak oh.llth about fifteen natives from Watpawa pah arrived with guns and axes mid proceeded to the land known as Takapau and destroyed the bridge apd portion of tramway constructed by Wilding & Bull, who were cutting timber there. The damage was done before tho Takapau natives knew what was going ( on, and the Waipawas had returned to .'their pah,. A threat was given that thoy would return, and it was fpared that if tliey did there would bo a serious conflict. It appears that the Waipawa and Poraugahau natives have lately objected to timber cutting on this land, and they held'several meetings on the subject, and in the end they determined to destroy the bridge and train. On tbe Government being informed of this thay advised that tho natives should be. warned that whatever their rights were they could not be permitted to take the law intp their own hands as they were now doing, The lajid in dispute has not been passed through the Native Lands Court, The Natives were told if further violence ;vas resorted to the Government would interfere, When this was boing urged on the Natives, Messrs Wilding and Bull wera sent for and it was arranged that one week be allowed them to remove logs they had cut, after which neither party is to go on the ground forsix weeks. In the meantime applications are to be made Co the Land Court to hear the case, and have the whole-matter decided by law. The Pakapau.Natives.who gave Wilding and Bull permission to cut Iho timber, have been in occupation for a number of years.
