GREYTOWN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

SPRING SHOW.

The above Society held their Spring Show in the Towb Hall, Greytown, yesterday under the most favorable auspices, the' weather being splendid, and the seaaon a very good oue for vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The stagers, Messrs Wood, St George, and Porritt, deserve great oredit for the artistic manner in which they arranged thej exhibits; Un onteiing the Hall, the first thing noticed was a. collection of Now Zealand ferus, which looked very well! On the ri«ht was the prcduce, amongst which were Borne magnificent home cured bams, and really prime butter. . On the same side of the Hall the fruits were' exhibited, the strawberries' being the..; most conspicuous. On the whole, we dp.not.think ilie fruit exhibits were as numerous, or the quality as Rood, as they might have been. The .••.vegetables'-we're good, and the exhibits, if .'hot numerous, shewed quality, the potatoes, lettuce, and cucumbera being. passing notice, as, to judge by appearance, the quality comes up to anything of the kind imported, mid we do not see why silk growing should not become one of the staple industries of New Zealand, as the climate and country are admirably adapted for the culture, and we should very muoh like to see steps taken for the.manufacture of the same in the Wairarapa,, The. plain „and,Ja,i)cv sewing, etc., was par excellence,' some very nice orewel work, knitted counterpanes, coseys, and other useful articles being on view. .' Dr Bey exhibited a esse of South Sea Island sea shells and cariosities which attracted a deal of notice, which they well deserved, as there were some rery rare specimens in the collection. There w also an exhibition, of jewellory by Messrs ludwig and' Son's, Wellington, and Hillier, ; of I Grdyfown, which was very' attractive, We also noticed on the walls some excellent .

photos of St Luko'a: Church, Greytowii, tsken by Mr Lewis of that towtisliip, there was an excellent collection of frame moulding exhibited by Mr J.Bai'nard, cabinet maker, of Gwytown.; Mr Barratt supplied an excellent lunch for the judges, Mr Webster, the energetic Secretary to tbe society," deserves the thanks of tha promoters and the public.generally for the able way in which everything waa o':irritid out.
