CORRESPONDENCE.

IN REPLY TO MR J. C. FER< ; GUSSCN. To thi Editor. Sir,-—With your permission, I would point out several mistakes that Mr Pergusson has made in his letter in your issue of November 24. He refers^ r the peti-'. tion of No, 4 Ward, which he"says was signed by every settler in the .Ward, I :■ have already pointed out that I objected, to many parts of the petition, and I knof others who were of the same opinion as" myself. He says that within the last four years we have been deprived of one-fourth of our revenue., I maintain that our part ofthe Ward has no claim he refers to. He says thaWmis been decided by the Board that all rales raised in a Ward should be o'xpendod in that ' Ward. Here he is wrong; the Board could not properly and jlißtly administer its funds if it adhered absolutely to any such rule; He maintains that* no settler has a direct claim on his ratea. I maintain that be has. The Board may use its discretion and attend to the most urgent cases first, but sooner or later each settler should have his contributions to the general fund, mihui general:, expenses, spent for his benefit. •, To make the matter more clear, he instances the case of a settler who does not require anything done to his reads. I would advise Mr Fergusson when he has plenty of leisure to go and look for that man, and when he has found him to make a note of it, I would also advise him to visit the southern portions of the Wainuioru Valley to see the properties of Messrs Vennell, .Cooper, Burrow, and others. He would havo to go on horseback; be could not take hishandsomo buggy and pair with which lie driyesjto his own house. These propertieirhavfl paid far more rates, and are sending far more wool and produce to market'thanili'js property; and yet they cannot' eveii get 1 a bullock dray to them. He would > find the® just now paoking their, wool on horseback over a high range of hills, and they;have done that, to my knowledge, : for the laGt twenty, six yearß, They have ii claim on the rateß in question, and it is for their benefit the' Board intends to spend them. Mr Fergussou has no claim whatever. lam, etc., William H, Beetham,
