GOOD NEWS FROM TERAWHITI.
From the N.Z, Times. There was quite a flutter in town yesterday abput'the Empire Gold* Mine, a newly opened claim at Teravvhiti. At quite an early hour's well-Jmoyyn sharebroker waq leaking anxious • enquiries for Empire stock, njuch to the astonishment of shareholders, no one fin tho directory of the Empire pompany having received lato intimation from the miuo manager of any find, good, bad, or indifferent, m the workings. "We behove the industrious shapebrolcer found his reward in securing some four thousand Bhares from unwitting holders at prices varying from £2O the thousand to Is Gd per share, As the day waned, ho'vever, prices stiffened, and shortly after ounset the mine manager (Mr Hewitt) made his appearance at the office of Mr Ijadd, the loyal manager, with a parcel of very good specimens, and the gratifying information that the lode had widened out to 4ft, and was showing good golden ston o. Hewasquiteastonished to henr of 'ho excitement in town, as lie whs under the impression that no one kiiow of tho find but himself, but at the mime time remarked that he noticed the stone lie had left in the tunnel on Siturday night had been turned over, an<l some of it apparently abstracted, Also he observed some peoplo about the claim yesterday afternoon, and his'suspicions being excited, ho hurried into the town to report progress to the directory. 'He was, however, to late to avert the." having 1 ' of two or three shareholders taken off their guard, That, however, is about the extent of the raid. The stock is now well held, and we believe that the utmost dispatch will be used to put the machinery on the ground, and mako the Empire Mine pay its way. This news is very gratifying as it shows that the Terawhiti goldfield is likely to come to the front after all as a substantial producer. Tho Empire claim is situated on the face of a steep hill, the' base of which is washed by Cook Strait; Ohau Bay is just beyond it. It ia sbout three miles from the Albion claim, The specimens brought in by the mauager showed gold freely, while the stone was'of a very superior character.
